Same-sex marriage amendment advances

I think the debate really goes back to separation of church and state. When our colonies wanted to be free of King George - well, even before that - when the pilgrims came here, it was to flee a country where the precise religion was dictated to them: Believe and practice "this" (the "Church of England") or be eradicated. So they left. Many went to Holland first, but then came here. Puritans primarily settled Massachusetts, Congregrationalists primarily settled Connecticut and New Hamphire, and so forth. Many of the colonies began with particular religious groups settling there and building it up. They learned to get along with one another despite their religious differences, and as the United States gradually came to exist as we know it, "separation of church and state" meant no one religion was to be dictated to the people of the nation, nor to be given supremacy over another, as King George and others had done.

Loss of Pike Nurseries not a surprise to customers

Customers — some relatively new, and others, lifelong — were not surprised that the 50-year-old Norcross-based company had failed as the state suffers a historic drought.

As homeowners watched their gardens die without rain, it made sense that business at nurseries also would dry up: No sense planting if there's no rain and watering is restricted.

"The drought has hurt [Pike] drastically. But they also hurt themselves," said Allen Rogers of Decatur.

Rogers, who was attending a home and garden show at the Cobb Galleria, said merchandise quality and service declined in recent months.

"I'm hoping, with the auction, they will come up with newer ideas," he said. "You could tell they were selling the same petunias, the same marigolds, as everyone else."

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November, blaming the drought.

Also, how do you square the fact that various parts of the PA have been found unconstitutional and unenforceable? Does this mean that there is now less tarnishing?

As an academic, I am sure that you have specific answers and actually read the Patriot Act.

Sri Lanka to introduce one laptop per child

Two-million primary school children are to be provided with US$ 100-worth laptops under a farsighted initiative.

This is being launched by One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), a US based organisation in collaboration with the Education Department and several local and foreign financial, technological and academic institutions.

Director OLPC Europe, Middle East and Asia Matt Keller, in an interview with The Sunday Times FT, said the World Bank has stepped into fund a pilot project to introduce laptops as an educational tool in nine provinces in the island.

OLPC Lanka Foundation has been set up to implement this massive education project aimed at supplying this learning tool into rural children’s hands.

This foundation will coordinate the logistical challenges in getting the project off the ground.

A C from Albertario, Canada writes:

A quad-core Mac Pro for dad (work and play) and iMac for the kids.

With the greatest reluctance I had to resurrect a retired PC to solve a homework conflict with the kids, as I could not afford to buy another Mac this month. It will, essentially, only be used for light internet research for school projects, and word processing. So I cleaned it up as best I could short of reinstalling the OS; I replaced IE with Firefox, I got rid of a major virus called McAfee Virus Scan and replaced it with (free) AVG anti-virus and anti-spyware, and I got rid of another major virus called MS Office and replaced it with Open Office (free). It's still pretty sluggish, I suppose I will have to take a trip through the registry at some point to clean it up, but for now, it serves the purpose quite well, and I won't be too bent out of shape if it dies.

Coming Soon: SR to Release E-mail Exchanges ... (Not so fast...)

HBO's use of the term KCSO for the sheriff's office: It hasnt been KCSO since Pierce Clegg was in office. Kootenai County Sheriffs Department. KCSD. (DFO: Oops ... How about KCPC: Kootenai County Porn Central?)

*Spectator re: Steve Smith's confirmation of the expense to pursue the Douglas/Kalani email trail: That's exactly why the CDA Press will never break stories like these. They will never invest in giving their reporters the support and resources to do investigative stories. But they'll pick yours up on the AP, and you can take that to the bank. (DFO: Bingo)

*Editor Steve Smith told me a few minutes ago that our pursuit of the e-mails between Prosecutor Bill Douglas and Marina Kalani has cost the newspaper about $20,000 to date -- and we'll probably spend that much in the next coupla weeks pursuing the latest e-mail scandal in the prosecutor's office.
