Emory Movie Wins Citywide Award

The sophomore filmmakers who won Best Picture at Emory's Campus MovieFest captured the Best Soundtrack award for the second year in a row at the college film festival's citywide competition on Saturday.

Director Chris Knific and Assistant Directors Stephen Beehler and Arjun Joshi won a copy of Apple sound-editing software valued at $2,000 for the original soundtrack of their picture “Not Another Bollywood Movie."

“I probably put in about 10 hours into the soundtrack," Knific said.

Knific recorded the music — drums, guitar, bass and keyboards — in his dorm room, and Amit Bery sang the songs' lyrics, which were penned in Hindi by Joshi.

The film, a story about an Indian couple who flees to America to get married against their parents' wishes, featured 16 other sophomores, who acted or danced in the film's Bollywood-inspired musical numbers.

Sundance: Stars, snow, and social cyborgs

Back in the early days of the Sundance Film Festival, when video was considered an emerging technology, there were independent filmmakers, and there were technologists. The two didn't typically go hand in hand.

Fast forward to this year's festival, which starts Thursday and will for the first time feature a 3D film, and indies and techies are one and the same. These days, it's near impossible to be the former without being the latter, what with the conveniences and opportunities that come with the likes of high-definition cameras, advanced editing software, and the Internet as a distribution tool.

So it's no surprise that the 2008 festival--an increasingly star-studded 10-day indie-film showcase in snowy Park City, Utah--has stepped up its technology-related programming.

Panasonic PV-GS320 camcorder

Another questionable design decision puts the FireWire and USB ports for transferring video to your Mac under the battery. You must remove the battery and plug your AC cables into the wall in order to transfer video.

The PV-GS320 is also missing a headphone jack and external microphone input—this can be a deal breaker for serious video jockeys. The camcorder has an accessory shoe for self-powered lights and other accessories.

The camcorder's menus were easy to navigate via the controls. However, they take up the whole 2.7-inch LCD screen, which makes it hard to preview changes to your settings without backing out of all of the menus.

Performance

The benefits of this design were quickly apparent in our testing, as our assembled panel of editors gave the video quality a Superior rating, both in low light and in normal shooting conditions.

Briefly: Logic review; LaCie ups warranties

In brief: MacNN has reviewed Apple's Logic Express & Logic Studio professional software, LaCie has increased the duration of its product warranties, and Apple ranked as the 12th top Web property for the month of October. Two days remain for Pomoto's 'Turkey Special' promotion, and Created Equal has released TeachMac/TeachIt 5 with support for iPhone as well as Apple TV via a $10 subscription. MacNN has reviewed Logic Express & Logic Studio, Apple's pro audio applications that emphasize ease of use with a single screen and templates.

Logic Express and Logic Studio share the same code base, bringing a variety of new features and requiring more CPU power than previous iterations. The revised user interface offers a single window with retractable panes to expand workspace, while Spotlight search support helps users locate needed files quickly.

CHB, quit talking about the labor and show me the baby

Mr Thompson, you are my hero and for you to respond to my humble blog is a lifetime memory. I have followed you for years, and know your awards and experience. I envy your life now, and I admire your past. If I could have been a fly on the wall with just a few seconds of the history you have participated in. Thank you so much for reading and responding.

Ms. Price I have greatly enjoyed reading your comments from this and other blogs and articles. Your excellent writing is to-the-point, and your education and experience is evident by the wise insight you bring. I especially love the kindness that shines through every word.

Ms. Price, if I was a single man, and this was a different world... I would be but a fool in love.

I meant no harm or insult to Mr.

January 2007 Archives

I'm going on about all this because the big news today is that the Police are reuniting for the Grammys, which take place on February 11. This is a big deal because, as my sis could tell ya all about, they all hated each other when the Police dissolved in 1984. The biggest drama took place between Sting and Stuart Copeland, who probably fought over whose frostilocks looked better. Men!

Word has it that this Grammy reunion will kick off some type of world tour... I'm sure my big sis will be there. L, if you are, pick up a new shirt... on me! I definitely owe you one.

Microsoft expands online software services

Microsoft Corp. is expanding its business software offerings over the internet.

The new services include e-mail, calendars, contact lists, webconferencing and videoconferencing. They are online versions of features in Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint software.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) launched the web services in September for businesses with more than 5,000 users. The company is now expanding the services to all companies, with a limited test run starting Monday and a broader rollout planned for the second half of 2008.

Microsoft's core business is still traditional licensed software. But under pressure from companies like Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Salesforce.com Inc. (NYSE: CRM) that are making software programs available online, Microsoft is shifting some of its software offerings to the web.
